When a family member starts struggling with a standard tub or high-threshold shower, it's not just inconvenient - it becomes a real safety concern. That's exactly the situation this family came to us with. Their elderly parent needed safer, easier access to the shower, and they didn't want to wait around hoping nothing went wrong in the meantime.

Here's what we were working with - a full gut of the existing shower space down to the studs. That's not just demo work for the sake of it. Getting back to bare framing lets us build everything the right way from scratch. We're talking proper waterproofing, correct framing for a built-in seat, and a shower pan liner system that's going to protect this home for years to come. You can see the PVC liner already set and the framed seat base roughed in - both critical pieces of a well-done age-in-place conversion.

The built-in seat is a big deal here. It's not an afterthought. We framed it directly into the shower structure so it's solid, permanent, and exactly where it needs to be for comfortable, safe use. No clunky removable benches or add-on accessories - just a clean, purpose-built solution that works with how this person actually needs to use the space.

We also roughed in the niche framing on the back wall - two recessed shelves at a height that makes sense for someone who may be seated while showering. Every decision in a project like this is intentional. The goal isn't just a bathroom remodel. It's giving someone the ability to stay in their own home, safely and comfortably, for as long as possible.

This one is still in progress and we're excited to share the finished result. Age-in-place bathroom remodeling is one of those projects that genuinely changes how a family lives at home. If you've got a similar situation - a parent, a family member, or even planning ahead for yourself - this kind of work is worth doing right.
